Java Online Games

After Shockwave, Java is the most popular tool for developing free online games. It is a popular programming language which was developed by James Gosling during the 1990s. It is somewhat related to C++ but is much more simple, and is an object oriented language. Java was developed because C++ was considered to be too complex and when using it there were many errors.

C++ also lacked the ability for distributed programming. Gosling and his colleagues wanted to produce a system that could be used on various platforms, from computer to handheld devices. By 1994 Java begin to be used on the internet. They felt that the internet would become interactive, and this would be the perfect environment to use their programming language. They were right. Java has become one of the most well known platforms in use today on the internet.

Many developers of free online games have quickly realized its potential. While Shockwave has replaced Java as the most popular engine used for online games, Java is still the tool of choice among many developers. Java became very popular when Netscape decided to support the program with their browsers. Most people use Java by the "applets" which are supported by their online browsers.

Yahoo has often been credited with heavily using Java to produce online games. Yahoo games is the portion of their website in which players can play games by themselves or against other players. While most of these games are Java applets, others have to be downloaded onto the computer. Reviews are even featured where users can post their thoughts about the quality of the game. Yahoo is one of the most prominent promoters of free online games. Everything from fantasy sports to card games are available.

Despite this, there are some criticisms of the Java programming language. Shockwave has a 3D engine which is much more powerful, and many developers have chose it rather than Java. Others complain that it is not a very pure object oriented programming language. Those who dislike object oriented languages will not design free online games with Java. Programs written in Java may also run slower than programs written in other languages.

Despite these complaints, Java has become one of the most popular languages used for developing independent games. Advances in this language should allow it to produce games which are much higher in quality and graphical detail. Many popular games can be played at the Java website.

Tradewinds 2

Tradewinds 2 is an adventure game wherein you get to sail to different ports and trade different commodities for money. Along the way you are bound to meet pirates who are out to get you. There are also ports which are inherently unfriendly so you need to capture them before you can dock. Your default ship can be loaded with a maximum number of canons and a variety of special ammunition. As the game progresses and you save up more money, you can opt to trade in your old ship for a newer, better one. There are several different ships available at different times. Each one has its own special abilities and it is up to you to decide if the trade is worth it.

Buying and selling goods is quite simple at first glance but as you go along, you will realize that you can get more out of the game. For business-minded people, you probably will like the virtual experience of living the swashbuckling life of a pirate while making a whole lot of money. Hard core players have been known to keep a notepad beside them to note when and where to go to sell a certain product for the greatest amount!

Well into the storyline, a trading complication is introduced into the game: contraband. Certain products will be considered illegal in certain ports and if you do not pay attention to such details, it might be your doing. You can also earn more money by doing special tasks for the governors. These tasks add to the flavor and complexity of the game.

The graphics are not really spectacular although they are enough to give you a very enjoyable game experience. The game play requires a lot of reading as exchanges between characters are written down on scrolls. You don’t really get to hear them speak. If it were not for the background music and the awesome canon explosions, I would have to say that the sound effects are a bit on the lame side.

The game’s system requirements are: 400 MHz processor; Windows 98, ME, 2000, or XP; 64 MB of RAM, and DirectX 7.

All in all, I would say that how much you will enjoy the game depends on you. You can choose to play it shallowly, without paying attention to the details. Or, you can be meticulous and enjoy a much better overall experience. I suggest you try the second one.

Shopping for English Premier League (EPL) Merchandise

The season is only at its half way stage and it has already become very exciting. Only 10 points separate the top five clubs and the race for the premiership title is heating up. At this point of time, the demand for EPL goods is very high. Each and every fan would like to have something related to his/her favorite club. May be it’s an extra-large poster on your bedroom wall or a card signed by your favorite star, you will want something.

When you decide to buy something, there is always the question of how much the product costs. Even if you are a die-hard fan, you need to afford something before buying it. If you go to a retail store, you will not be able to get what you want for an agreeable price. The prices are very often too high for something that’s not worth that much. You will not be able to spend all your savings on football goods. Most retail stores come with a price tag that is shocking. But if the prices are so high, is there a way to buy? Yes, there is.

An auction site is the answer. You might wonder what the difference between buying a product on retail and on an auction. There is a lot of difference. In an auction, you get to choose the price which you can pay for the product. If you win, the product will be yours. The starting price of most auctions is very low and if you are clever enough or if you have a little bit of luck, you can hit jackpot. It would be as if Santa Claus gave you the gift that you wanted. Furthermore, you will save a lot of money by buying on an auction site.

Using an auction site is very simple. You just visit the site, search for you favorite EPL product and bid for it. I will let you know an easy way to win auctions. Bid as low as you can and bid as many times as you can. Another technique in winning an auction is to bid on an item when it’s about to close. There are very few auction sites for EPL goods and they are very rare to come by. In these sites, you will have products that are not available in the retail store. I recently bought a Cristiano Ronaldo jersey for 8 pounds. That’s how easy it gets friends. So, what are you waiting for?

Nintendo Welcomes Wii

Most gamers may know it as Nintendo Revolution, but the new name is Wii (pronounced as “we”). As of April 27th, Nintendo’s seventh-generation video game console, their fifth home console, became the newest successor to Nintendo GameCube. Wii is unique with the Wii Remote, or “Wii-mote”, which can be used as a handheld pointing device and as detecting motion in three dimensions. The controller contains a speaker and a rumbling device which provides sensory feedback.

As of June 2006, an exact release date has yet to be confirmed. Nintendo’s most recent statements confirm that Nintendo plans to release Wii in the 4th quarter of 2006. Internationally, Nintendo hopes to launch with no more than four months difference between the first and last launching regions. At a June 2006 briefing in Japan, it was stated that a precise release date and price would be announced by September.

It was confirmed that Wii will cost no more than $250. A Nintendo spokesman said that the price in the U. K. will be in line with Japanese and US prices. Nintendo has intentions to have approximately 6 million console units and 17 million software units by March 31, 2007.

Wii is Nintendo’s smallest home game console yet, at approximately the size of three standard DVD cases stacked together. The console has been confirmed to have the ability to stand either horizontally or vertically. Nintendo has stated that a small attachment can be equipped to play on DVD Video.

Nintendo has displayed Wii in various colors: platinum, lime green, white, black, blue and red. The final colors of the console are still to be announced. The systems shown at E3 2006 and in different trailers appear to have several small changes from the original design. Nintendo not only had branding on the case which replaced the Wii logo, but the disc loading slot is enlarged slightly as the reset button is moved from next to the eject button to the power button. The power indicator light is moved from next to the power button inside the button. The port for the sensor bar, a device used for the Wii Remote’s three dimensional sensing is found at the rear of the console. This port did not appear in any of the former Wii hardware images, including the images in Nintendo’s E3 media press kit.

At E3 2006, Nintendo announced WiiConnect24, a feature of the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection that will permit the user to remain connected to the Internet in standby mode. Some possibilities of this newest feature that were mentioned at E3 2006 included allowing friends to visit the player’s village in games like Animal Crossing, and downloading new updates for games while in standby mode. It would also be possible to download DS promotional demos using WiiConnect24 and later transfer it to Nintendo DS.

Wii will support wireless connectivity with the Nintendo DS. It’s been stated that Nintendo was still ironing out details when features using this connectivity would be available to the public.

Learning to Play Omaha Poker

In this article I will give you the basic to playing Omaha Poker, If you are already established with Texas Hold'em you should already understand the basics of Omaha. However beware if you are a Hold'em player as there are some pitfalls which are pointed out towards the end of the article.

How to Play Omaha.
Omaha is played in pretty much they same way as hold'em but with several differences, the main and most obvious difference being that the player is dealt 4 hole cards with which to make the best hand rather than 2 in poker. You can use any of your 2 hole cards and any 3 of the boards 5 cards to make the best hand. Hands are ranked in the same way as Hold'em (Royal Flush being best down to High Card being worse)

Omaha is not Hold'em
This is the most important thing to remember when converting from Hold'em. Being dealt 4 cards doesn't give you an 2 extra hands it gives you 6. Omaha is much more variant and bad beats can be a very common occurrence, Just because you are ahead on the flop and you know it, there will still be many outs for your opponents. Also being Dealt AAKK doesn't necessarily mean you are powering ahead of your opponents preflop. Imagine you have Ac Ad Ks Kd and you hit the flop of 3c 4d 7c you may think you have the nuts, but really there are so many potential hands out their such as flush and straight draws, 3oak and 2 pair even hitting an A on the river will only give you 30ak against so many more powerful hands. Also an important thing to remember is if a pair appear on the board their is a very high chance of someone hitting a fullhouse or 4oak. Straight flushes are also a very high possibility in Omaha games.
Also you must use at least 2 of your hole cards, for example the board see's 4 clubs come up and you have the Ac and the rest of your cards hold no value. You do not hit a flush at all. This can lead to many curious hands, another example being Q K Q K 10 are showing on the board and you have A J, you hit a straight, if another player has A K they' don't hit a full house just three of a kind (KKK) with Ace Kicker. This can be a strange rule to get used to especially if you come from a Hold'em background where you don't need to play any of your cards.

Other Versions of Omaha
Hi/Lo - Two separate pots are available to win . The lo pot is where you have the five lowest cards made from 2 of your cards and 3 on the board (the best hand being A2345) flushes, straights, pairs etc don't count for the lo pot. Assuming the other player can beat the lo pot winner with his 5 best cards he will win the high pot.

Start out at the small tables when playing omaha $0.02/$0.05 are best if your just starting out. Play around with Pot limit and fixed Limit (quite rare to fine players here) tables, as well as Hi/Lo tables. New players may not be as comfortable playing Hi/Lo tables straight away (so this might be a good way to exploit them!)

Watch Movie on PSP

Do you want to watch movie on PSP? This is one of the wonderful options that your PSP provides. It is a rather simple task to get to watch movies on PSP. Although it may be an unknown way to many PSP users you can soon find your way through using this as your guide to know how to watch movie on PSP.

• First switch off your PSP. Connect to the computer using an USB cord or cable . Switch on the PSP once you have connected it to your computer.
• Enter the “Settings” menu then press X , this would link your PAP to your computer. Go to “My Computer” and you would find the PSP listed there indicating that your computer has recognized this external device.
• Go to your PSP next. Access your memory card and open your folder titled “PSP”. Here you have to create two more folders “MP_ROT” and “100mnv01”.
• Now the next step is your movies . If you have the MP4s saved on your computer then all you have to do is move these movies into your “100mnv01” folder that you created. Once you have put all your movie files onto the folder in the PSP then all you have to do to watch movie on PSP is to click the movie that you want to see and here you are already watching your favourite movies.

This is all you need to do to watch movie on PSP. In case your movies are not saved on your computer then you have to find a software that would help to take the DVD put it on your system and also convert it into the PSP compatible MP4 format.

Sony PSP

The ultimate handheld multimedia machine is what I call Sony’s latest gaming console. It is the best thing Sony has ever come up with so far. You can do almost anything with it!

Officially marketed as a gaming console, there is much more to it than that. For one thing, you can download your favorite music files onto the memory stick and voila, you have a portable music player! It also makes use of a new storage device called the UMD. It looks like a CD but is much smaller. Aside from games, you can get music videos and movies. With its wide high resolution screen, you can now watch your favorite movies anywhere, anytime you want to. If you are a high tech bookworm like me, then you will love the PSP even more. You can download e-books from the internet and put them on the PSP as JPEG files and read the latest novels on the go! Do you want to carry precious memories around anywhere you go? Convert your pictures into digital format and transfer them onto the memory stick. Now you can have hundreds of pictures at your fingertips!

The relatively large screen size makes for easy viewing of almost any format you use. During game play, the details will just astound you. Watching a movie is like watching it on DVD. You can adjust the contrast so as to suit your viewing preferences.

The memory stick’s storage capacity might give you a bit of a headache, though. There are large capacity memory sticks available but many of them are a bit pricey. However, I would say that it’s worth it.

It would be a good idea to purchase the headphones that come as an accessory. The built-in speakers of the PSP can be a bit disappointing. They just don’t give you the best experience when playing a game, watching a movie, or listening to music. The headphones give a much better sound quality.

Another drawback is that there doesn’t seem to be enough good games for the console yet. Compared to other handheld gaming consoles, the Sony PSP lags behind when it comes to the release of new games. The UMD disks are quite expensive as well.

Then again, I am sure you will be able to find something to do with your PSP while waiting for the next game or movie to come out.

Roller Rush

If you like the game Diner Dash, then you will probably like Roller Rush. The game play is very similar yet the theme is quite different. Roller rush is based on the 50's theme of drive-in dining. You play as a girl in skates and you need to serve as many customers as you can in order to achieve the money goal for the day. Achieving your goal gives you stars. You can then use these stars to purchase different upgrades. You can choose to immediately use up your stars on upgrades or you can wait for them to accumulate in order to get better upgrades. You can also get bonus points by completing a roll - same task done in succession. The longer the roll, the more money you get.

Roller Rush is a game of skill and strategy as well as fast reflexes. The game starts out easy, with good time spacing between customers. The higher the level, however, the more customers you get and the faster they come. There are different types of customers – some more impatient that others. You tend to get the more impatient ones at the higher levels.

The overall theme of the game is a treat, especially if you are into retro. You have a jukebox that plays music in the background throughout the game. It uses a default playlist. However, you can tweak the game and have the jukebox play your own mp3s stored on your hard drive! Now you can play and listen to music at the same time.

The graphics are not spectacular but they suit the game very well. They are pleasing to the eyes and different animations make for a good gaming experience. As opposed to many other games out in the market, the content is kid friendly. You have to be a little bit older than a “kid” to be able to beat the game, though. For the not-so-skilled players, there comes a point in the game wherein you just cannot seem to handle all the customers and earn enough money in a day. It’s either you step up or lose all your lives.

Pacman

In 1980 a little known distributor by the name of Midway released a game destined to become one of the greatest arcade classics of all time. Developed by Namco, Pacman is a maze game in which a player navigates Pac-man, a yellow figure, through a maze eating pills and avoiding ghosts.

Pacman has undeniably had a significant impact on the video game industry. Until Pacman, video games were almost exclusively “Space Shooters” – games in which a player controls a space craft that has to shoot something. Pacman was the first game to break out of that model and be incredibly successful. Since then, video games have diversified considerably and continuously branch out into new and creative areas.

The name Pacman is derived from the Japanese phrase Pakupaku which loosely translates into “he eats, he eats”. In fact, the game was originally released under the name Puck Man in Japan, but when the game was picked up by Midway to be released in the US the name was changed to Pacman for fear of vandalism that could potentially be inflicted by Americans in arcades and will include scratching the P into an F in the Japanese name “Puck Man”.

The first known “perfect Pacman game”, in which a player must complete all 255 levels, collect all the bonuses and never be caught by a ghost, was played by Billy Mitchell at 1999. Billy set the record at a local arcade in New Hampshire while employing a strategy of improvising throughout the 6 hours of game play and not using any repeating patterns or tactics. The final score was 3,333,360.

Paintball Basics

Paintball is a safe, simple yet challenging and strategic sport that is played usually by two teams, each with at least two players. Adults and kids alike enjoy this sport as they often refer to it as an advanced or improvised game of tag.

Tournaments attract many spectators of all ages, as it is a very exciting game to watch.

Paintball games are of various types, however, the most popular game often played is called "capture the flag". The object or the goal of this game is for teams to advance to the opponent’s base, move the other team’s flag to its destined location, at the same time guarding your own flag.

The paintball field has many obstacles such as tires, forts, old cars, hay and the newest are “inflatables” that are constructed as refuge for team players; making the game all the more exciting, as if participating in an actual game of war in videos.

When one is hit, it can hurt briefly and at times give players bruises. Players are typically required to be in long sleeves shirt and pants, making sure that the color is not be identical as that of the judge and complete paintball gear such as mask, helmet and goggles for safety.

The sport of paintball has a distinct and accurate set of rules that are strictly followed. The producer of the tournament is the absolute authority in regard to either an alteration or addition to the rules; marshals oversee the event, and their decision is always final. No dispute on the paintball field is accommodated or entertained.

A military approach to paintball is useless, as that knowledge is recognized and understood by the teams. A team’s tactic should be carefully planned; your team’s line of attack will not be known by the opposing team, and there should be a quick switch of plans in case something goes wrong.

There must be a lot of team work involved, as everyone moves through the field. As a team member moves, there should be others to guard and keep watch and give off covering shots when necessary. A team that moves together with a common objective will have a great chance of succeeding in this game.

Communication in the field is also very important. A team-mate can shout the position of the opponent. The moment that a player is seen, the game for that player is up; so there is no reason for you to keep quite; instead, inform the others the location of the enemy.

The excitement of this game concludes when you are seen and eliminated - a situation that all team players struggle to avoid.

Mobile Gaming Explained

If you're not familiar with mobile games, you will be soon because this is the next big area of growth expected in the billion dollar gaming market. A mobile game is a computer software game played on a mobile phone. Mobile games are usually downloaded via the mobile operator's network, but in some cases games are also loaded into the mobile handsets when purchased, or via infrared connection, Bluetooth or memory card. Mobile games are developed using technologies such as DoCoMo's DoJa, Sun's J2ME, Qualcomm's BREW (Binary Runtime for Wireless) or Infusio's ExEn (Execution Environment). Other platforms are also available, but not as common.

The different platforms

BREW is the more powerful technology, giving, as it does, complete control of the handset and complete access to its functionality. However this unchecked power could be dangerous, and for this reason BREW development process is tailored mainly towards recognised software vendors. While the BREW SDK (Software Development Kit) is freely available, running software on real mobile hardware (as opposed to the provided emulator) requires a digital signature which can only be generated with tools issued by a handful of parties, namely mobile content providers and Qualcomm themselves. Even then, the game will only work on test enabled devices. To be downloadable on regular phones the software must be checked, tested and given approval by Qualcomm via their TRUE BREW Testing programme.

Java (aka "J2ME" / "Java ME" / "Java 2 Micro Edition") runs atop a Virtual Machine (called the KVM) which allows reasonable, but not complete, access to the functionality of the underlying phone. This extra layer of software provides a solid barrier of protection which seeks to limit damage from erroneous or malicious software. It also allows Java software to move freely between different types of phone (and other mobile device) containing radically different electronic components, without modification. The price that is paid is a modest decrease in the potential speed of the game and the inability to utilise the entire functionality of a phone (as Java software can only do what this middle-man layer supports.)

Because of this extra security and compatibility, it is usually a quite simple process to write and distribute Java mobile applications, including games, to a wide range of phones. Usually all that is needed is a freely available Java Development Kit for creating Java software itself, the accompanying Java ME tools (known as the Java Wireless Toolkit) for packaging and testing mobile software, and space on a web server (web site) to host the resulting application once it is ready for public release.

Current limitations of mobile games

Mobile games tend to be small in scope and often rely on good gameplay over flashy graphics, due to the lack of processing power of the client devices. One major problem for developers and publishers of mobile games is describing a game in such detail that it gives the customer enough information to make a purchasing decision. Currently, mobile games are sold through network carriers and operators portals, meaning there are only a few lines of text and perhaps a screenshot of the game to entice the customer. There is a reliance on powerful brands and licences such as Tomb Raider or Colin McRae, a racing game. There is also the use of well-known and established play patterns, meaning game play mechanics that are instantly recognizable in games like Tetris, Space Invaders or Poker. Both these strategies are used to entice mobile gamers to purchase games for a fee when a limited amount of additonal information is provided by the wireless carrier, who typically acts as a third party hosting the game.

Recent innovations in mobile games include Singleplayer, Multiplayer and 3D graphics. Virtual love games belong to both of singleplayer and multiplayer games. Multiplayer games are quickly finding an audience, as players find the ability to play against other people, a natural extension of their mobile phone’s connectivity.

MMOG Currency Revolution

MMOG currencies was first introduced from the popular game EverQuest (EQ) with their currency "platinum", also known as "plat". Since the first pioneers of selling plats on Ebay, many have argued and frowned upon those that have ever purchased plats online. I recall many players harassing others with foul names such as "newb" and "ebayer". It has been over 5 years that everyone has been arguing whether the secondary market of trading MMOG money would ever be accepted.

Since the introduction of EverQuest platinum, there were probably more than 70% of players that wouldn’t even consider purchasing plats and discriminated against those who did. As of today, the numbers have been reduced extraordinarily. About 40% of the players now purchase currencies, 30% still disliking the idea and 30% of the other players probably does not care too much and may purchase some them selves in the near future.

Although online game currency is still a new trend to the online gaming community, it is getting popular at a very hasty rate. Within the end of 2010, I believe even the publishers themselves will support the foundation of the secondary market. Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) have now begun their own EverQuest 2 gold auction system and planning to start a new MMORPG in which they intend to sell currencies and items themselves. With their support, I’m sure the secondary market will be accepted over a period of time.

The secondary market is only as successful as the primary. With the release of World of Warcraft (WoW), there are now more than 4.5 million subscribers. A vast majority of those players are probably new to the MMORPG world. A large increase of subscribers means alot more potential for the secondary market. So far, WoW gold has been the hottest seller of the year and perhaps a few more years down the road.
With the huge demand on, many players have even started a career in which they collect money, items and other virutal assets and sell them to players or to stores who may buy them at wholesale price and resell it back to individuals.

The secondary market one day may even be bigger than the primary. Many gamers of today probably spend more on buying currencies, items and equipments than their subscription fee. The publishers themselves can't even deny the fact that there are lots of money to be made in the secondary market that over a vast period of time I'm sure they will be selling their virtual assets themselves. As for whether the players will support it or not, I believe is just a matter of time before acceptance, of course there will always be a few who will dislike the idea.
